Context: Lot 219, Unit 13, Level 9, 1.74-1.94 ft. below datum. Disturbed fill layer including 19th-century materials that probably relate to the Carroll family occupation of the nearby Susquehanna site, 18ST399.

“PIO IX PONT MAX” around the bust of Pope Pius IX.

Back:
Written in Italian, “O MARIA CONCEPITA SENZA PECCATO ORATE PER NOI CHE RICORRIAMO A VOI” (Translation: O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to you) and the date “1854” around the Virgin Mary.

History:
On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin as a dogma of the Roman Catholic Church (Ott 1911). This medal most likely commemorates that event.
