Introduction

Site 18ST676 is a multi-component site west of Leonardtown in St. Mary’s County. The site contains a late 18th- to mid-19th-century artifact concentration and evidence of a Middle Woodland period base camp or hamlet.

Archaeological Investigations

Phase I and II investigations were conducted by R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates in 1997 and 1998 in advance of proposed residential development at Tudor Hall Farm.

This site yielded over 900 prehistoric artifacts and approximately 100 historic cultural items. The historic artifacts date from the late 18th to the mid-19th centuries and generally derive from plow-disturbed contexts. The prehistoric artifacts, which appear to date from the Middle Woodland period, were found mostly below the plowzone. Several variably dense concentrations of fire-cracked rocks and lithic artifacts were also discovered. These prehistoric features yielded several faunal and floral remains. Prehistoric diagnostic artifacts included (during Phase I) two Popes Creek ceramics, one untyped square-based point, and one Piscataway point. About 100 late 18th- to late 19th-century artifacts were also found at this site.

Archeobotanical Studies

A single 2-liter flotation sample was retained from Feature AA1-II. The feature contained a relatively light concentration of ten fire-cracked rocks, five cores, and three use-modified lithic artifacts. The entire matrix of the feature was retained for flotation analysis. The processed sample was submitted to Justine McKnight for analysis. Recovered archeological plant remains were limited to hickory wood charcoal and unidentified amorphous carbon.
