Introduction
Site 18WO183describes a multicomponent site in Worcester County. Significant 17th and 18th century historic occupations are documented, and 19th century debris and a Late Woodland campsite are also evidenced within the site boundaries.
Archaeological Investigations
Site 18WO183 was identified in 1997 during a Phase I survey of US 113, and Phase II testing was conducted at that time. Evidence of two historic occupations and at least one historic residence were documented.
Archaeological Data Recovery by TRC Garrow Associates, Inc. included excavation of 26 test units that yielded substantial 18th and 19th century assemblages. Mechanical stripping followed and revealed a brick house foundation, well, privy and various pits. A total of 21,001 historic artifacts and 45 prehistoric artifacts were recovered.
Archeobotanical Studies
Kathleen Furgerson analyzed four uncharred wood samples from barrels excavated during the data recovery effort. Three samples were dry and brittle, one was water-saturated. The samples from Feature 20 were identified as eastern white pine (Pinus strobus). A fourth sample from Feature 49 was tentatively identified as cedar (Juniperus spp.).
