Site: 18BC27 Federal Reserve Site Context: Feature 38 Privy, Aged Men’s and Women’s Home of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Late 19th – early 20th centuries Site Date Range: c. 1770-1930 Materials: Wood and iron Dimensions: 3cm x 2.5cm x 4.1cm Description: Wooden peg top with traces of an iron tip. Wooden tops were often made of boxwood or lignum vitae. Antique example on right from a private collection shows what the iron tip may have looked like. The Federal Reserve top is missing the top rivet, which was sometimes made of brass. The 1895 Montgomery Ward catalog offered five models of tops of differing hardwoods and sizes. |
