Description: Wooden peg top with traces of an iron tip. Wooden tops were often made of boxwood or lignum vitae. Antique example on right from a private collection shows what the iron tip may have looked like. The Federal Reserve top is missing the top rivet, which was sometimes made of brass. The 1895 Montgomery Ward catalog offered five models of tops of differing hardwoods and sizes.
