Context: Brick lined privy, Lots 119, 132. Privy associated either with African-American or German immigrant neighborhood.

Site Date Range: Late 19th to early 20th century 

Materials: Continental European hard paste porcelain.

Dimensions: 2.25” height

Description: Porcelain teapot sized for a child. Molded with upright flowers appearing to be irises, but printed and painted over the glaze and over the molding with a wild rose motif. Gold gilt painting on handle and feet and sponging on rim.  Base of vessel has enameler’s mark number 712 painted in gold. Impressed number “1648” on base.

History: When the manufacture of Continental European hard paste porcelain became widespread in the 19th century, factories began producing toy tea sets and doll accessories (Small Talk 2015). Tea sets became especially popular in the second half of the century, but it is very difficult to attribute these pieces to particular manufacturers.
