Small Frozen Charlotte doll. This example shows that the rear of the doll was not completely glazed. 18BC80 - These little Frozen Charlotte dolls were popular from 1850 to 1920. Most were produced in Germany, where they were called penny dolls (King 1981:560) and were originally intended as a bath toy. Small versions were sometimes baked into cakes as party favors, and others were used as dolls. They were named after a poem entitled “Young Charlotte”, about a girl who froze to death on the way to a party because she refused to cover up her dress with a coat. Small Frozen Charlotte doll. This example shows that the rear of the doll was not completely glazed. 18BC80 - These little Frozen Charlotte dolls were popular from 1850 to 1920. Most were produced in Germany, where they were called penny dolls (King 1981:560) and were originally intended as a bath toy. Small versions were sometimes baked into cakes as party favors, and others were used as dolls. Marseille was among the most prolific or German doll manufacturers, beginning production of dolls around 1885 and continuing until around 1930 (King 1981:400). Dolls marked “390” were usually part of jointed composition dolls. Flattened open area at top of head for placement of hair. 18BC80 This complete doll, similarly marked, has a wooden and composition body. Height 17.5”. Private collection.

Bonnet dolls mostly date from after 1885 (King 1981:306). This porcelain head would have been attached to a cloth body and would have had porcelain arms and legs. Gold gilt painting on handle and feet and sponging on rim. Base of vessel has enameler’s mark number 712 painted in gold. Impressed number “1648” on base.

Wooden top with traces of an iron tip. Wooden tops were often made of boxwood or lignum vitae. Antique example below shows what the iron tip may have looked like. The 1895 Montgomery Ward catalog offered five models of tops of differing hardwoods and sizes, from 18BC27. 3cm x 2.5cm x 4.1cm. Wooden peg top with traces of an iron tip. Wooden tops were often made of boxwood or lignum vitae. Antique example below shows what the iron tip may have looked like. The Federal Reserve top is missing the top rivet, which was sometimes made of brass. Third quarter of the 19th century
These are part of a wooden peg or Grodnerthal doll. The portion on the right is a torso, with slots where the legs attached and the pieces on the left are probably legs from 18BC27, Feature 30. Grodnerthal dolls were first imported to England from Amsterdam in the early 19th century. Earlier peg dolls had layers of gesso on portions of the body not covered by clothing and were painted facial features and shoes. Later in the century, the quality deteriorated, with gesso layers omitted and less detailed carving. http://www.miniphile.com/Pages/Vic-dolls.htmGrodnerthal doll examples.
 Skittles or nine pin of painted wood. An ancient game, skittles involves projectiles, usually balls, propelled from one end of an alley in an effort to knock down nine pins standing at the other end. Skittles has many regional variations in skittle size and shape, alley length, size and shape of the balls and rules. Ninepins has been popular in North American since the 17th century, remaining so until tenpins became well-established in the late 19th century (Cooperman 2017), from 18BC27. http://www.tradgames.org.uk/games/Skittles.htm

Unfinished bone die. This example is one of seven unfinished dice or game pieces recovered from this privy. The die has been shaped and markings made for the placement of the dots, for later drilling. This style and shape of money box was made for at least four centuries and could be glazed or left unglazed. A similar money box in the collections of the Museum of London has been dated broadly between c. 1580 and 1900. A rubber ball broken in half, with the manufacturer’s name still visible on the center seam. The New York Rubber Company was founded in 1851, but they changed their trade name to Wicapee Rubber in 1859.
