North Devon gravel tempered earthenware basting or baking pan, vessel 10.
Glazed on the interior. Rim, side and partial base of a shallow (2.5”) flat bottomed vessel.
A similar vessel (dimensions 15” x 11”) was recovered at Jamestown and
pictured in Watkins (1960:42, Figure 21). Similar to this mid-17th century basting pan
recovered from an archaeological site in Bristol England shown on right.
The Jamestown baking pan was drape molded with a reinforced scalloped rim and a loop handle. |
