Site composed of four urban lots; Tavern Lot North, Tavern Lot South, Rowhouse Lot North, Rowhouse Lot South/Rear Yard Area. Site divided into Tavern Lot & Rowhouse Lot (2 properties- 431 & 433 North Front Street). Two rowhouses shared a common backyard. Non-diagnostics (brick, mortar, shell) were noted and sampled. Features on tavern site displayed an exceptional degree of integrity.
Notes for Tavern Lot North: Lot 18; mid-18th century development by William Noon. Small outbuilding & separate structure denoted only by hearth remnant, sheet midden from this c. 1769-1850 period. 2nd phase marked by c. 1800-1850 sheet midden, tavern foundations & a barrel privy. C. 1850-1900 occupation represented by basement & fill, a timber-framed structure w/ hearth & a cobbled surface.
Notes from Tavern Lot South: Bull's Head Tavern owned by James & Eliz. Edwards, c. 1790-1846, leased to various tenants to run.
Notes from Rowhouse Lot North: 433 North Front is Northern Rowhouse Lot.
Notes from Rowhouse Lot South/Rear Yard Area: 431 North Front Street is southern Rowhouse Lot. Remnants of at least 2 buildings- one constructed late 18th century & destroyed 1820-1860. Rear yard has 2 discrete (late 18th-early 19th century) sheet midden deposits.
Since feature numbers start at 1 in the various excavation areas, the area description has been added to site numbers for differentiation. |
