SITE DATA

Site Number: 18MO1
County: Montgomery
Site Name: Hughes Site
Brief Description: Late Woodland village and burials; Late Archaic and Early & Middle Woodland smaller component
Site Type: Prehistoric
Site Notes: Amateur archaeologist Nicholas Yinger heavily excavated this site in the 1930s. His focus was graves and other types of features were mostly ignored. Archaeologist Richard Stearns gained permission to observe and record some of Yinger's excavations. Much information was lost due to Yinger's lack of professional methodology. He also only retained artifacts that interested him. He excavated and described 73 burials, the only features for which he kept relatively good records. These burials are included as a whole in this database and are curated at the Smithsonian. 1960s excavations by the ASM SW chapter appear to have been limited, though few records have been located. Professional excavations by American University in the 1990s identified 76 features, not including post molds. Some 374 post molds were identified and excavated. Many apparantly represent multiple phases of a palisade wall surrounding the village. 2006 excavations by ASM are written up in MO 254. MO252, a short preliminary report was also used to identify and describe excavated features. An additional 28 post molds were identified and excavated in 2006. Though 6 additional features were identified (Features 77-82), only 4 were excavated. An artifact catalog in MO 254 only includes counts for feature 80.
Site Date: Early Woodland; Late Archaic; Late Woodland; Middle Woodland
