SITE DATA

Site Number: 18CV84
County: Calvert
Site Name: King's Reach Quarter
Brief Description: Late 17th to early 18th-century house site and prehistoric camp
Site Type: Historic/Prehistoric
Site Notes: While Medusa and Synthesis Project indicate an early 17th-century date, King's Reach (18CV83) dates from the late 17th century to c. 1711. King's Reach Quarter (18CV84) is believed to be an outlying support structure to King's Reach (18CV83), the first dwelling of Richard Smith, Jr. Around 1711, Richard Jr. built his manor house dwelling at nearby Smith's St. Leonard (18CV91). Between 1996-1999 the JPPM Public Archaeology Program conducted excavations at King's Reach Quarter (18CV84). Investigations included intentisive systematic surface collections, and excavations of 132 shovel test pits and 54 - 1.5 meter square test units. Excavations revealed features relating to a trench set structure, a fenceline, and a possible second structure. Few features were excavated. Some 191,683 artifacts were recovered, however approximately 185,590 of these are oyster shells. No final report has been produced.
