SITE DATA

Site Number: 18PR580
County: Prince Georges
Site Name: Bowieville Mansion
Brief Description: 18th- to 20th-century plantation/farmstead, structures, possible slave quarter, brick kiln
Site Type: Historic
Site Notes: Due to proposed development, only the eastern half of the site was examined during Phase II testing. Over 75 shovel test pits and 6 test units were excavated. 5,800 historic, 2 prehistoric and 239 modern artifacts were recovered. Of the historic materials collected, architectural artifacts made up the vast majority, mainly brick and window glass. Five possible features related to outbuildings and/or the ruins of a possible tenant structure were identified during Phase I. The features included a brick foundation underlying a wooden shed sitting next to the mansion, a possible brick kiln area, a trash pit or sheet midden, and a dry-laid brick walkway. Since only half of the site was evaluated, it is possible these areas were not all tested. No intact cultural features or artifact deposits were identified. Determination of elibigility for the National Register is undetermined until the western half of the site is evaluated.
Site Date: ca 1780-1820; ca 1820-1860; ca 1860-1900; ca 1900-1930
Site Ethnic Group: African American; Anglo-American
Site Function: Artifact Scatter; Building/Foundation; Domestic; Frame-built; Plantation
