Oak Creek G (18PR665)
Site 18PR665 consists of a domestic site dating from the mid-18th century that may represent a tenant dwelling.
Phase I shovel test profiles at the site consisted of two strata. The first stratum was determined to be
a plowzone. Of the 30 artifacts recovered, 16 were surface collected, 11 were found in the first stratum,
and 3 were recovered from the second stratum.
The site was originally identified by Archeological Testing and Consulting, Inc. (ATC) during Phase I testing in
2003. The site was defined by the recovery of historic architectural, personal, and domestic artifacts and
one prehistoric lithic recovered in seven positive shovel tests and from surface collection. The historic
artifact recovery consisted of coal, brick fragments, buff-bodied stoneware, white salt-glazed stoneware,
brown-glazed earthenware, pearlware, whiteware, olive bottle glass, tobacco pipe fragments,
oyster shell, and an unidentified lithic.
Phase II testing included excavation of 125 shovel test pits and nine 3 x 3 foot units. While testing recovered
a variety of historic domestic and architectural artifacts largely from the plowzone, the Phase II did not
identify any intact features or cultural deposits. In addition, the investigations revealed varying levels
of disturbance from agricultural activities and erosion. Based on the Phase II documentation, it was
determined that site 18PR665 does not meet the criteria for eligibility in the National Register of
Historic Places given its lack of potential to yield important information and loss of integrity.
No structure was depicted in this location by the 1878 G.M. Hopkins Atlas, but the Otho R. Beall house stood to
the northwest by this time. It is possible that this location represented an earlier structure.
