Bone toothbrush handle and partial stock of a wire drawn toothbrush of the Maryland variety of the England type. Stamped "J. Newton Gilbert O Annapolis MD" indeterminate letters in circle. J. Gilbert Newton operated a pharmacy in Annapolis beginning in 1901 (Drug Trade Weekly, Volume 3) and continuing at least through 1929, when he is listed in the November 26, 1929 edition of The Capital newspaper as being a druggist in Annapolis. The artifact style used here is based on Barbara Mattick's A Guide to Bone Toothbrushes of the 19th and Early 20th Centuries (2010 Xlibris Corporation). Mattick divided bone handled toothbrushes into 21 types and 7 varieties based on physical characteristics.
