Isolated Finds
If the record you are looking for has a site number with an "X" in it, such as 18APx19, that is one of Maryland's documented isolated finds. When archaeologists do surveys, they sometimes find artifacts that do not fall within the boundaries of an archaeological site, because some items have been randomly lost by people in areas where no one regularly lived or worked. Non-site artifacts are documented but they are rarely retained. However, occasional isolated finds have inherent research value because of the nature of the artifact, and these may be retained even if the artifact is not associated with a larger site assemblage. In Maryland, such isolated finds are assigned an "X-number." For example, 18APx19 represents the 19th isolated find to be recorded and retained from the City of Annapolis. X-numbers allow the MAC Lab to manage non-site archaeological materials using the same systems for finds associated with an official site number.
