Colonial Williamsburg Office and Comparative Collections

During the early years of Colonial Williamsburg's archaeological investigations (pre-1957), much of the work was done by cross-trenching lots to look for structural foundations. Artifacts were saved in a non-standardized fashion and are often very loosely provenienced—sometimes, but not always, to block and lots. Artifacts on this website labeled as Colonial Williamsburg Office and Comparative Collections are from these early excavations.
