Webb Collection
W. Howard Webb of Pennsylvania was an extensive collector of pre-Contact artifacts. His collection, which consists of petroglyph fragments, soapstone bowls, stone tools, and thousands of projectile points. Many of the items were collected along areas of the Susquehanna River that are now inundated by the Conowingo Dam Reservoir, which was constructed in 1927. Webb was an avocational collector who worked with John L. Baer, a former curator of the Smithsonian’s Division of Physical Anthropology. Baer's own collection had been merged with Webb’s collection prior to it being donated to Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum in 1985. It was formally accessioned into the state’s archaeological collections in 1991.
