Wesley Grove South (18AN172)
Site History
This site represents an Archaic base camp and a rhyolite blade cache in what is now Baltimore Commons Business Park. Since its late 19th-century discovery, the site has been destroyed by gravel mining, as reported by G. Conrad and S. Geasey after a 1976 Phase I corridor survey.
Archaeological Investigations
Precontact period artifacts from the site were found in 1899 and included a hammerstone, two celts and a pestle. Other artifacts collected later by R. Gibbs, Richard Stearns, and T.D. Jones included a fragmented bannerstone, three drilled shells, a cache of 107 rhyolite blades, a celt, fragments of a steatite bowl, gorget fragments, and end scrapers. These artifacts are curated at the MAC Lab.
