Larkington Cove 1 (18AN196)

Site History

The Larkington Cove 1 (18AN196) site is a Late Woodland shell midden located on Brewer Creek in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

Archaeological Investigations

This site has been of interest to avocational archaeologists during the 20th century: Henry Wright, Richard Stearns, and Newton Collinson all collected from the site and donated their collections to the Smithsonian Institution. Avocational archaeologist Henry Sturdy tested the site in the 1940s. The site was officially recorded in 1971 based on information from Henry Wright.

In her 1977 survey of the South River, Laurie Cameron Steponaitis visited the site, noting that it is now covered with a regrowth of deciduous trees and low brush, but that it is probable that the area was cultivated some 30-40 years previously. The oyster shell midden extends 30-40m along the shoreline and 20m inland. The depth of the deposit is remembered by Mayr to be about 60cm. No artifacts were recovered by Steponaitis. Professor Henry Sturdy reported a pottery vessel, ware unknown, a bone awl, and a variety of animal and fish bones.
