Curtis Bay (18AN2)

Site History

Prehistoric shell midden/shell mounds located on the west bank of Curtis Bay. The site, which contained rhyolite points and axes, was heavily collected in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by avocational archaeologist T. D. Jones and others.

Archaeological Investigations

This site was initially identified in 1905 by Talbot D. Jones, an insurance underwriter who was also an active avocational archeologist. After his death in 1926, his collection and field notes were donated to Johns Hopkins University. The T.D. Jones Collection includes 19 artifacts from this site.

The T. D. Jones Curtis Bay site collection was cataloged in the 1980s by Carroll Bennett as part of the larger Evergreen Collection owned by Johns Hopkins University. The Jones collection is curated as part of the Evergreen Collection at the Johns Hopkins Archaeological Museum although artifacts depicted on the Diagnostic Artifacts website are on loan to the MAC Lab.
