Archaeological Investigations
Avocational archaeologist T.D. Jones collected artifacts from this site in the first decade of the 20th century. Jones graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1899 and his collection and field notes were donated to Johns Hopkins. In 1980, the Division of Archeology of the Maryland Geological Survey analyzed the artifacts in the Jones Collection, which is now curated at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. The T.D. Jones collection includes 64 artifacts from this site.
Jones described the site as having dense scatters of flaked stone and projectile points of quartz, quartzite, flint, rhyolite, red and yellow jasper. He also found precontact pottery and a grooved axe. He also described the “cache” consisting of eleven quartzite pieces was found in October 1901. These specimens were lying close to the surface, according to Jones.
