Heise 7 (18BA221)

Site History

The Heise 7 site (18BA221) is an Early and Late Archaic short-term camp and possible 18th century domestic site. The site is located in Baltimore County, Maryland near the Liberty Reservoir.

Archaeological Investigations

Non-systematic surface surveys of the site were conducted by avocational archaeologist David Heise at least eleven times between 1981 to 1999. There is no report on these findings, but Heise reported the site to the Maryland Geological Survey in 1981 and a site form was completed. Artifacts from the site were donated to the Maryland Historical Trust by Heise in 2012 and they are curated at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab. Lithics included the following diagnostics: 1 piece soapstone that appears to be a pipe bowl fragment, 1 steatite bowl fragment, a rhyolite straight stemmed point, 1 rhyolite side notched point, 1 quartz Normanskill, and 1 rhyolite Brewerton side-notched point.

There was also a historic artifact concentration at the site and the artifacts collected included over 100 fragments of red-bodied earthenware, 7 fragments of wine bottle glass, 13 white salt glazed stoneware, and 2 tobacco pipe fragments.
