Heise 125 (18BA318)

Site History

Site History The Heise 125 site (18BA318) is a multi-component site consisting of an Early or Late Archaic or Middle Woodland short-term camp and a large 18th-century artifact concentration. The site is located in Baltimore County, Maryland near Norris Run. Archaeological Investigations James Flater conducted an investigation of Early Archaic camps and quarries in the Liberty Reservoir area in 1986 and prepared a report of his findings (Flater 1987). This site is noted on his project map. Non-systematic surface surveys of the site were also conducted by avocational archaeologist David Heise on six to eight occasions between 1987 to 1999. There is no report on these findings, but Heise reported the site in 1987 and a site form was completed. Artifacts from the site were donated to the Maryland Historical Trust by Heise in 2012 and they are curated at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab. Lithics included quartz and rhyolite points, a triangular point and a drilled soapstone object. There was also a historic artifact concentration at the site and the artifacts collected included olive-green wine bottle fragments, over 200 white salt glazed stoneware sherds, 421 redware fragments, a rat tail pewter spoon, porcelain, a button, and 15 kaolin pipe fragments. The Myersville Rockshelter site (18FR1) is a Late Archaic-Late Woodland rockshelter located at the base of a bluff along Catoctin Creek in Frederick County, Maryland. The rockshelter faces west, and is about 15 feet wide, 8 feet deep, and about 10 feet high.

Archaeological Investigations

The rockshelter was excavated to a maximum depth of 12 inches in 1951 by avocational archaeologists Spencer Geasey and Gus Selckman. The two men split ownership of the archaeological artifacts they removed from the rockshelter during their excavation. The collection included triangular points, Marcey Creek pottery, Stoney Creek (?) pottery, cache blades, shell-tempered, cord-marked pottery, and coarse, rounded quartz-tempered pottery.

The site was reported to the Maryland Geological Survey by Geasey in 1970 and the Geasey artifacts were donated to the Maryland Historical Trust. There is no report on this archaeological work.
