Archaeological Investigations
This site was initially identified in the late 19th century by Talbot D. Jones, an insurance underwriter who was also an active avocational archeologist. Jones's collection and field notes were donated to Johns Hopkins University and were analyzed in 1980 by the Maryland Geological Survey Division of Archeology. A total of 120 artifacts is listed in Jones's collection from 18BA36, which is curated at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab. Artifacts collected by Jones included an axe, a gorget, chisel, and a rubbing stone and he also noted projectile points, bannerstones, pestles, mortars, and hammerstones. Jones also noted that the site had been collected by avocational archaeologists for many years.
Ed Otter conducted Phase II testing of two parts of the overall site in 1991. The areas studied were found to contain highly disturbed contexts and were determined to be not eligible for the National Register of Historic places. Other portions of the site have not been professionally studied and are considered potentially eligible.
