Site History
The Perry Point I-5 site (18CE256) is a multi-component site consisting of a Late Archaic-Woodland base camp and an18th- century mill complex located near Mill Creek southeast of Perryville in Cecil County, Maryland.
Archaeological Investigations
In 1987, Milner and Associates conducted Phase I testing at this site. Shovel test pits were excavated at 30 meter intervals and the subsequent Phase II testing consisted of 60 shovel test pits and 9 1x1 meter units.
Precontact period artifacts included the following point types: Levanna, Orient Fishtail, Susquehanna Broadspear, as well as chert and quartzite flakes, core fragments, possible ground stone, Mockley and Middle Woodland cord marked ceramics, Minguannan, Shenks Ferry, Townsend and Potomac Creek ceramics. No precontact period features were identified in the testing.
Sixty seven mid-18th century artifacts were recovered during Phase II investigations including white salt glazed stoneware, North Midlands slipped earthenware, redware with trailed white kaolin decoration, and porcelain, mostly concentrated north of the mill race, and may be associated with a house near the mill site. The only features identified were the mill race and the mill pond.
