Archaeological Investigations
In 1985, Henry Ward visited 18CE29-3, examined the Dilks collection and used it to analyze the sites. Jay Custer & Henry Ward (U Delaware) surveyed quarry-related sites through pedestrian survey, interviews, and Phase II testing. Functional analysis suggests the habitations were semi-permanent in nature and were established for the harvesting of seasonal food resources. The site was probably inhabited annually for a limited period during the summer and fall. Several possible precontact period features were identified: a dish-shaped charcoal filled feature may be a hearth, two small, stained areas, a pebble and cobble filled depression, and a feature that contained Mockley, Coulbourn, and Wolf Neck sherds.
A total of 2647 artifacts were recovered (2386 prehistoric, 261 historic). Artifacts included fire cracked rock, jasper debitage, cobble flint debitage, and quartz and quartzite debitage, a nutting stone, chopper, a pestle, knives, scrapers, utilized lithics, and ceramics. Also found were 2 Madison points, Wolf Neck cord-marked, Coulbourn cord-marked & net-impressed, Mockley cord-marked & net-impressed ceramics, 1 Rossville point, 1 Marcy Creek and 1 Dames Quarter ceramics, Bare Island points, Brewerton points, and 2 broken bifaces that appear to be Paleoindian.
During the 1981 Phase III work, a number of features were found, including 7 possible prehistoric post holes, 13 small pits, 37 tree falls, and 2 large pits.
