Heise Liberty Reservoir Survey (Carroll County)

The following essay describes the archaeological sites in Carroll County recorded by David Heise in the 1980s and 1990s during repeated collecting visits along the shorelines of the Liberty, Reservoir in Carroll County, Maryland. These collections were donated to the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab in 2012. Twenty-two sites are included in this summary, and each site is briefly described below, with its Maryland state site number and its name.

Archaeological Investigations

18CR77 (Heise 1) – This site is an Archaic and Woodland short-term resource procurement site located at the Liberty Reservoir. The site is currently inundated by Liberty Reservoir.

18CR78 (Heise 2) – This site is an Archaic base camp located at the Liberty Reservoir. The site is currently inundated by Liberty Reservoir.

18CR79 (Heise 3) – This site is a Late Archaic to Early Woodland base camp and a 19th-century artifact concentration with a possible structure located along the shores of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR86 (Heise 11) – This site is an Archaic lithic scatter located along the shores of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR92 (Heise 20) – This site is a Late Archaic and Late Woodland base camp or short-term resource procurement area located along the shores of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR95 (Heise 24) – This site is a Middle to Late Archaic short-term resource procurement area located along the shores of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR99 (Heise 28) – This site is a transitional Archaic base camp located along the shore of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR108 (Heise 39) – This site is an Archaic and Woodland lithic scatter located along the shore of the Liberty Reservoir. This site is inundated by Liberty Reservoir.

18CR109 (Heise 40) – This site is an Archaic and Woodland short-term resource procurement area located along the shore of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR113 (Heise 49) – This site is a precontact period lithic scatter and short-term resource procurement area located along the shore of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR114 (Heise 50) – This site is an Archaic and Woodland short-term resource procurement area located along the shore of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR123 (Heise 66) – This site is a Late Archaic to Early Woodland short-term resource procurement area located along the shore of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR125 (Heise 69) – This site is a precontact period lithic scatter located along the shore of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR133 (Heise 108) – This site is an Early Archaic and Middle Woodland short-term camp and a lithic reduction site located on the shore of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR135 (Heise 110) – This site is a Late Archaic and Late Woodland short-term resource procurement area located at the Liberty Reservoir. The site is currently inundated by Liberty Reservoir.

18CR138 (Heise 115) – This site is a Late Archaic short-term resource procurement area located on the shore of the Liberty Reservoir.

18CR141 (Heise 120) – This site is a Late Archaic lithic scatter located at the Liberty Reservoir. The site is currently inundated by Liberty Reservoir.

18CR148 (Heise 144) – This site is an Archaic base camp and short-term resource procurement area located at the Liberty Reservoir. The site is currently inundated by Liberty Reservoir.

18CR171 (Heise 188) – This site is a precontact period short-term resource procurement located along the shore of the Liberty Reservoir.
