Site History

The Heise #CR85 site (18CR180) is a 19th-century possible structure and a Late Archaic and Woodland lithic scatter. The site is located in Carroll County, Maryland near Liberty Lake.

Archaeological Investigations

Non-systematic surface surveys of the site were conducted by avocational archaeologist David Heise. There is no report on these findings, but Heise reported the site to the Maryland Geological Survey in 1987 and a site form was completed. Artifacts from the site were donated to the Maryland Historical Trust by Heise in 2012 and they are curated at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab. Lithics recovered included the following: 1 chert triangular Levanna and two stemmed points.

There was also a historic artifact concentration at the site and the artifacts collected included 2 gunflints, 3 kaolin tobacco pipe fragments, manganese tinted glass, green glass, whiteware, creamware, and annualar decorated pearlware.
