PC #37 Turner Family Farm #1 (18CV422)
Site History
Multicomponent archaeological site 18CV422 (PC #37 Turner Family Farm #1) is an 18th-19th-century artifact concentration, a possible domestic structure, and an Archaic lithic scatter located off of Dare's Beach Road in Calvert County, Maryland.
Archaeological Investigations
In 1998, the field where this site is located was plowed and surface collected in 5 × 5 m units by Molly Stephens during a Phase I survey of the Parkers Creek watershed. Precontact artifacts were concentrated in the eastern 200 meters of the site, while historic materials were in the 150-meter western portion of the site.
Precontact artifacts included 1 intact Palmer point, 2 point fragments, and 86 pieces of debitage. Most of the material was made of quartz and quartzite and a small amount was made of chert.
A structure shown on the 1908 U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Map corresponds to the location of the concentration of historic artifacts. Material included white salt glazed stoneware, blue shell edge pearlware, undecorated pearlware, blue and brown transfer printed earthenware, grey-pasted stoneware, and olive-green bottle glass. Nothing is depicted in this location on the 1901/1910 (which are the same) or 1938 USGS 15' Prince Frederick quad. It is, however, quite possible that a 19th century building once stood here. Unfortunately, no 19th-century maps of Calvert County are known to MHT.
