Caney Creek (18CV427)
Site History
The Caney Creek site (18CV427) is a late 19th-century artifact concentration located on the east bank of Caney Creek in Calvert County, Maryland.
Archaeological Investigations
The site was visited and recorded by archaeologist Kirsti Uunila (Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum) in 1999. A shell layer, bricks, and other artifacts were visible on the surface, on the beach and in the water. Vegetation above the high-water line obscured the ground surface further up the bank, a steep slope that rises to a terrace 20 feet above. At the time the site was recorded, it was eroding into the creek. It is unknown whether the site is confined to the plowzone or has any subsurface integrity.
The informant collected artifacts from below the mean high-water line on the bank and from the beach and conveyed them the Maryland Historical Trust for use a type collection at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab.
