Linden (18CV431)
Site History
The Linden site (18CV431) is a circa 1870 house standing in Prince Frederick in Calvert County, Maryland. This site is an extraordinarily well-preserved urban farmstead with a dwelling, outbuildings, and elements of earlier landscapes. Originally a 68-acre farm, Linden was subdivided several times since 1868.
Archaeological Investigations
Linden, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the home of the Calvert County Historical Society. Prior to improvements connected with the historical society acquiring the building, James Gibb performed a Phase I survey. The improvements included resurfacing of an existing drive, parking lot construction, waterline installation, and the construction of an addition to house the Society's research library and archives.
The Phase I project included surface inspection and 102 shovel test pits within areas of proposed improvements. This work revealed evidence of an eroded landscape that had been stabilized in the 20th century, utility lines, and seven previously undocumented structures. One of those structures, an abandoned c. 1920 cistern or dry well directly behind the dwelling, was exposed and excavated in advance of the construction of the addition.
