Point Midden (18CV447)
Site History
Archaeological site 18CV447, a multi-component site consisting of a Late Woodland shell midden, a Late Archaic unknown site type, and an 18th-century artifact scatter located on a located on a small terrace on a bluff overlooking St. Leonard Creek on the grounds of Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum.
Archaeological Investigations
Field investigations at this site have consisted of field visits by the archaeologists at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, starting in 2003. In 2010, one fragment of Late Woodland Townsend pottery was found, providing the temporal affiliation of the site. In 2011, 1 stemmed, quartz projectile point, probably a Bare Island or small Savannah River, and 1 stemmed, quartzite projectile point base, probably a Bare Island, were found. Historic artifacts found in 2011 included a fragment of green hand-blown bottle glass and an English brown stoneware sherd with a WR excise stamp.
