Lilypons Bridge (18FR23)

Site History

The Lilypons Bridge site (18FR23) is an Early, Middle, and Late Archaic and Early, Middle, and Late Woodland short-term camp, and a possible base camp dating to the Late Archaic and Middle Woodland periods. The site is located in Frederick County, Maryland on a low terrace near a freshwater tributary of the Monocacy River.

Archaeological Investigations

A Phase I non-systematic surface survey of the site was conducted by avocational archaeologists Spencer Geasey and Gus Selckmann. There is no report on these findings, but the site was reported to the Maryland Geological Survey in 1970 by Spencer Geasey. Artifacts from the site were donated to the Maryland Historical Trust by Spencer Geasey and are curated at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab. Lithics included the following point types: Kirk corner-notched and stemmed points, Kanawha stemmed, Stanly stemmed, Neville, Guilford Lanceolate, Mountaindale, Otter Creek, Brewerton corner- and ear-notched, Lackawaxen, Bare Island, Savannah River stemmed, Halifax side-notched, Vernon, Lehigh/Koens-Crispin, Susquehanna Broadspear, Orient Fishtail, Rossville, Meadowood, Accokeek, Wormans Mill, Selby Bay lanceolate, side-notched, and stemmed, Jack's Reef pentagonal, Elongate triangular, Levanna, and Madison.
