Harrison (18FR288)

Site History

The Harrison site (18FR288) is a possibly Paleoindian period site, as well as Early Archaic and Late Archaic camps located along the Potomac River northwest of Tuscarora in Frederick County, Maryland.

Archaeological Investigations

This site was located by avocational archaeologist Spencer Geasey in 1977. He found 1 LeCroy rhyolite point, 1 rhyolite point tip, 1 unfinished quartz point, 12 quartz flakes and cores, 7 rhyolite flakes, 1 quartzite flake, and 1 round lead bullet (possibly dating to the 18th century). He noted that another collector found a jasper fluted point in the general vicinity of this site, but this point had been sold to a Pennsylvania collector.

In 2002, R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates conducted Phase I shovel testing in advance of a construction project and rediscovered the site. Out of 29 shovel tests within the site area, 21 were positive. The site yielded 94 prehistoric artifacts, including three Late Archaic points/knives (Vernon or Clagett side-notched points), a quartz core, biface fragments, retouched flakes, and unmodified debitage, as well as two isolated historic artifacts.
