Jefferson I (18FR93)

Site History

The Jefferson I site (18FR93) is an Early, Middle, and Late Archaic and Early, Middle, and Late Woodland short-term camp, and Middle Woodland base camp located on an unnamed tributary of Catoctin Creek in Frederick County, Maryland.

Archaeological Investigations

The site was first reported to the Maryland Geological Survey by avocational archaeologist Spencer Geasey in 1969, who had conducted a non-systematic surface search of the site. The site was visited by Geasey, Tyler Bastian, Mareen Kavanagh and Carole Ebright in 1988, after the site was already under development.

Geasey's collection from the site, later donated to MHT, contained about 400 projectile points from Early Archaic through Late Woodland, with many Middle Woodland Selby Bay points. Steatite and abundant rhyolite flakes were also reported.
