Site History
The Janes Island site (18PR159) is a multicomponent precontact site consisting of Early, Middle, & Late Archaic and Early, Middle, & Late Woodland short-term resource procurement camps located east of South Laurel in Prince Georges County, Maryland.
Archaeological Investigations
F.M. Uhler, associated with the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, collected from the site between 1937 and 1960. This collection was transferred to the Smithsonian before 1976. Uhler collected numerous projectile points from all periods of the Archaic and Woodland periods, but the vast majority of the points date to the Late Archaic period. Uhler reported the site to Tyler Bastian of the Maryland Geological Survey. In 1987, National Park Service employee John Pousson, conducted an overview and assessment of the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center.
