Riggs Mill (18PR406)

Site History

The Riggs Mill site (18PR406) is an Archaic and Woodland short-term resource procurement and lithic quarry located east of Silver Spring near the northwest branch of the Anacostia River in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

Archaeological Investigations

Avocational archaeologist Richard Slattery collected artifacts from the site in the early 1930s and completed a site form in 1990. In 1994, R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. conducted a Phase I survey of site during the Adelphi Manor Water Quality Project. Goodwin excavated a total of 45 shovel tests at 15-meter intervals across the northeast portion of the site. One 1 × 1 meter test unit was excavated on a low terrace adjacent to the unnamed tributary; this was excavated to a depth of 95 cm below surface. Based on the results of the Phase I testing, Goodwin recommended Phase II testing at the site.
