Marcey Creek (44AR2)

Site History

The Marcey Creek site (44AR2) is an Early Woodland period precontact site, possibly a small village, that serves as the "type" site for Marcey Creek ceramics. The site is located overlooking the Little Falls of the Potomac River in Arlington County, near Washington, D.C.

Archaeological Investigations

The site, which is only about .25 acre in size, was recorded and excavated by Carl Manson in 1948. In addition to Marcey Creek ceramics, Manson found a number of quartzite stemmed projectile points, a bannerstone, a grooved axe, and fragments from steatite vessels. Three pit features, each about two feet in diameter, and filled with fine gravel, were excavated.
