Site 44IW14 (44IW14)

Site History

Site 44IW14 is a colonial period site located between the Pagan and the James Rivers and overlooking the James River in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. The site was located in a cultivated field and evident as a heavy scatter of oyster shell, some brick bats, and colonial period artifacts. The site form did not contain any historical research that tied the site or the structure it contained to a property owner.

Archaeological Investigations

The site was excavated in 1977 as part of a salvage effort by the Virginia Research Center for Archaeology under the direction of Nicholas Luccketti, with assistance from students from St. Lawrence University. Substantial brick structural foundations were exposed in the cliff face and the site was actively eroding at the time of the fieldwork. The building appeared to have been about 42 ft. in length and likely dated to the 18th century.
