Littletown Quarter (44JC35)

Site History

The Littletown Quarter site (44JC35) is the site of an 18th-century quarter for enslaved laborers working for planters James Bray III or (later) Lewis Burwell IV. The site is located along the James River east of Williamsburg in James City County, Virginia.

Archaeological Investigations

Archaeological investigations of the Littletown Quarter site were conducted in 1973 by archaeologists working for the Virginia Research Center for Archaeology. This work was done prior to property development by the Busch Corporation.

Excavation uncovered two 18th-century earthfast structures containing subfloor pits. One structure contained two subfloor pits and the other contained four. No evidence of chimneys were found at the site once the plowzone had been removed- leading to the conclusion that the chimneys were constructed of wood and daub.
