Unnamed House Site/Wills Cove (44SK56)

Site History

The 44SK56 site is a late 17th- and early 18th-century house site located on the east bank of the Nansemond River in the city of Suffolk, Virginia. Some references to this site give it the name Wills Cove site; in the VCRIS files, this name is actually associated with 44SK55, a Woodland period shell midden site.

Archaeological Investigations

Avocational archaeologist Ed Bottoms collected the site for many years. The Virginia Research Center for Archaeology and the Archeological Society of Virginia undertook salvage excavations at the site in 1978. Several pit features were excavated and yielded ceramics, tobacco pipes, and small finds dating to the second half of the 17th century and the early 18th century.
