Wolfe Neck (7-S-D-10)
Site History
The Wolfe Neck site (7-S-D-10) is a Middle Woodland period shell midden located near Lewes in Sussex County, Delaware.
Archaeological Investigations
Archaeological work at this site was conducted in the early 1960s by avocational archaeologists. Probing with metal rods revealed the extent of the midden, which was then trenched. In total, about 500 square feet of an estimated 2870 square feet of the midden was excavated. The midden was comprised of oyster (Ostrea virginica) and clam (Venus mercenaria), with clam being the predominant shell. Very few lithics were recovered, while pottery fragments were found throughout the midden. These fragments were identified as Pope's Creek and Accokeek wares.
