Area G (18PR657)

The site consists of an Archaic through Late Woodland period lithic procurement station and reduction worksite. The prehistoric artifact collection recovered from the Phase II investigation represents general artifact classes associated with a lithic procurement and reduction activity area. The temporal period of occupation for Site 18PR657 includes an Early Archaic component based on one rhyolite St. Albans projectile point, but the majority of the diagnostics reflect Late Archaic to Late Woodland periods.

Despite the wide range of artifact types and chronological periods of occupation, the geomorphological assessment of the landform and the distribution of the prehistoric artifact assemblage suggest that the integrity of the site’s context has been impacted. Analysis of the artifact distribution further reaffirmed this conclusion.

A total of 40 shovel test pits and 10 1x1m test units were excavated by A.D. Marble & Co. during the Phase II excavation of 18PR657. This Early Archaic and Late Archaic to Late Woodland period site consists of a lithic procurement station and reduction worksite containing a variety of debitage, bifaces, a core, and finished tools reflecting lithic reduction and tool maintenance activities.

This site is not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. This Early Archaic and Late Archaic to Late Woodland period site consists of a lithic procurement station and reduction worksite containing a variety of debitage, bifaces, a core, and finished tools reflecting lithic reduction and tool maintenance activities. The recovery of several Early to Late Woodland ceramic sherds and a small number of FCR fragments attests to cooking activities, but the absence of hearths, burnt earth features, or carbon deposits precludes a definitive association of cooking within the site. Based on the data and interpretations from the Phase II archaeological investigation, Site 18PR657 does not have the potential to yield new information important in prehistory or history. No additional investigations are recommended for Site 18PR657.
